None of this is new. It is only getting faster.

Look at the gaps between the big shifts. Life took billions of years to arrive. Hominids, a few million. Humans as we know them, a hundred thousand. Then agriculture at ten thousand, the scientific revolution at a few hundred, industry at roughly one hundred fifty, the digital turn in decades. Each threshold lands faster than the one before it. Richard Linklater's Waking Life has a chemistry professor name this on screen: the telescoping of the evolutionary paradigm. The pattern is old. It predates cities, writing, and us. What changed recently is only that we can now watch it happen inside a single lifetime.

02 / The mechanism

You already run on this.

Your pancreas does not ask you to approve insulin. Your kidneys filter without calling a meeting. That is not laziness. It is design. Attention is the most expensive thing a system owns, so anything that can run without it gets pushed below the surface of awareness, which frees you to point attention at what still needs it.

Any system running on a limited attention or energy budget offloads its routine functions to conserve that budget.

Civilization makes the identical move, only outward. Every function it can hand to a machine, it eventually does: lifting, then counting, then remembering, then deciding. External organs, doing the work so the collective mind is free to look at something else. Nobody calls a body lazy for it. We only flinch when it happens outside the skin.

03 / Conditions

The world has to allow it first.

The urge to offload is not enough on its own. Conditions have to permit it. Farming is the clean example. For most of human history it was not a choice we kept refusing, it was a door that stayed locked. The late Pleistocene was cold, dry, low in atmospheric carbon dioxide, and violently unstable across short spans. Plants could not produce enough to stake a society on. Then the climate settled into the Holocene: warmer, wetter, higher carbon dioxide, steady. Within a blink, farming appeared on its own in several parts of the world at once. Same species, same drive, different conditions.

Richerson, Boyd & Bettinger, 2001. Was agriculture impossible during the Pleistocene but mandatory during the Holocene? Their claim in one breath: not possible under glacial conditions, near mandatory under Holocene stability.

04 / The motor

Each offload builds the ramp for the next.

Here is why it accelerates. Every function we hand off does two things at once: it frees attention, and it changes the conditions. Farming frees hands and builds surplus. Surplus permits cities and writing. Writing permits records, law, and memory that outlives a person. Each layer unlocks the next, so the gap between them shrinks. That is the engine underneath the telescoping. Change is not speeding up for no reason. We keep laying the track that lets the next train move faster.

05 / Four instances

The same motor, four times.

Each transition absorbed a form of work, raised output, and outran the institutions built for the world before it.

1750 to 1850

Agricultural Mechanization

Plows and threshers absorbed physical farm labor, the dominant form of work for all of human history. Productivity per acre soared while rural labor demand collapsed. Communities fractured; displaced workers flooded nascent cities.

1850 to 1950

Industrial Revolution

Machines absorbed skilled craft labor. A single factory worker outproduced hundreds of artisans. The lag produced child labor and dangerous conditions before unions, regulation, and the 40-hour week caught up.

1960 to 2010

Digitization & Computing

Computers absorbed clerical processing and routine cognition. The productivity paradox appeared: heavy investment, uneven gains. Wages pulled away from productivity, the signature of a lag period.

2010 to Present

AI & Cognitive Automation

For the first time, automation absorbs non-routine cognitive tasks: legal analysis, medical imaging, creative generation, code production. The lag is already visible. We are inside the fragility window now.

06 / The lag

The danger was never the machine.

Offloading is not the risk. The risk is the gap between what we have handed off and what our institutions still assume. Most of them still take for granted that income comes from labor, that a job is an identity, that work is how a society sorts itself. Those assumptions were built for a world that is already being automated out from under them. The pain in every transition lives in that gap: the years after the offload and before the institutions catch up. We are in one of those years now.

What it is

Civilization has always been constructing an external autonomic layer, one that absorbs its routine functions, decouples its growth from human labor, and forces its institutions to adapt under conditions it cannot fully see.

Strip civilization away and the shape still holds. A body offloads its organs so the mind is free to look up. A species may be doing the same at its own scale, for the same reason. Seen this way, automation is not something happening to us. It may just be what attention does when it runs out of room.
